Communication. It’s often the best way to prevent and resolve conflict before it reaches the legal system. You don’t have to be friends or spend time together to achieve a peaceful coexistence, but you should try to be a good neighbor and follow these tips: Say hello. At the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you see a moving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors’ names and regularly offer a friendly greeting.

Provide a heads up. If you’re planning a construction project, altering your landscaping or hosting a big party, contact your neighbors beforehand.

Do unto others. Treat neighbors, as you would like to be treated. Be considerate about noise from vehicles, stereos, pets, etc.Know your differences. Make an effort to understand each other. Differences in age, ethnic background and years in the neighborhood can lead to different expectations or misunderstandings.

Consider the view. Keep areas of your property that others can see presentable.

Appreciate them. If the neighbors do something you like, let them know. They’ll be pleased you noticed, and it’ll be easier to talk later if they do something you don’t like.

Stay positive. Most people don’t try to create problems. If a neighbor does something that irritates you, don’t assume it was deliberate.

Talk honestly. Tolerance is important, but don’t let a real irritation go because it seems unimportant or hard to discuss. Let your neighbors know if something they do annoys.

Remain calm. If a neighbor mentions a problem they have with you, thank them for the input. You don’t have to agree or justify any behavior. Wait for any anger to subside before responding.

Listen carefully. When discussing a problem, try to understand your neighbor’s position and why he or she feels that way.

Take your time. Take a break to think about what you and your neighbor have discussed. Arrange to finish the conversation at another time.

A children’s celebration beginning at 7 p.m. will feature music and entertainment from Radio Disney on the main stage, a bubble artist, LED balloon artists and other great street performers roaming City Walk Drive. The celebration will close with a spectacular fireworks show at 9 pm. The party resumes at 9:30 p.m. with the New Year’s Eve celebration where alcohol will be available for purchase to responsible adults until 1 a.m. A brand-new, never-before-seen 3D video projection mapping show with fireworks is scheduled for this year’s midnight presentation. Illuminated statuesque “Light Beings” will seem to glide along the columns of Sugar Land City Hall while elaborate cirque jugglers and stilt walkers entertain the crowd within the plaza. An entertainment staple in New Orleans’s French Quarter, the Dragon Masters interactive comedy team will keep everyone laughing while Flipping Out, a stunt trampoline group from Florida, will amaze the crowd with their air-catching moves. This is a free event with parking available at both the Texas and Lonestar Garages. There will be additional parking at Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd., with a free shuttle service to Town Square from 6:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sugar Creek Baptist Church is sponsoring this year’s Get Home Safely program –people who identify themselves as designated drivers will receive free soft drinks and water throughout the evening from any beverage station at the event. Now we do the same thing with our children and grandchildren. Some of our Greatwood neighbors produce some truly beautiful and spectacular Christmas lighting for the rest of us to enjoy.

Here in Greatwood we have an annual Christmas Lighting Contest and for the past 10 years, Shelley Buechner has organized this event, gotten judges, gotten signs to indicate the winners and posted the results on the community web site. She has done this because she really loves the season and wanted to do something for her neighborhood. For the past two years, it is Shelley wh o was also responsible for hanging wreaths on most of our neighborhoo d entrances. After this year, she has decided to pass the event on to someone else.

The Amazing Longhorn Race will be back for another exciting event on Saturday, March 29, 2014. ARJH PTO will be hosting the 2nd annual race from 10-1, for students in 5th grade and up.The competition will be ϐierce as teams of two complete 12 fun and challenging activities.
