Landmark Living Official Publication of Huntington Landmark Senior Adult Community www.huntingtonlandmark.com ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON Diane Yrisarri, Lifestyle Director January 2016 Under the direction of Orchestra Director Kari Ivey and Choir Director Kimberly Ransom, Landmark Residents and their guests were delighted by the performance from the students of Sowers Middle School at the Annual Huntington Landmark Christmas Luncheon.
The event began with a delicious luncheon provided by Jolanda's Catering and lovely bottles of wine, anonymously donated by a resident. Dessert was placed on the tables consisting of a slice of yummy cheesecake with a cherry topping and a small decorative Christmas tree as holiday garnish.
The tables were decorated with centerpieces of Christmas wreaths, along with beautiful poinsettias generously donated by O'Connell Landscaping. Towards the end of lunch 83 students dressed in either black and white attire representing the band or in sequined purple dresses or black vests representing the choirs started to file into the Main Lounge to begin their performance. With new material, songs and choreography they overwhelmed the audience with their talents. At the end of their performance, the young students took a moment to walk out into the Landmark audience to give a handshake, a thank-you, a hello or even a hug. It was a wonderful day for the students and the residents.
The residents thought so too and showed it through their sincere appreciation in a generous donation of $642 collected for the students of Sowers Middle School. Recreation also donated $100, for a total sum of $742 in donations. The Directors from Sowers were completely surprised and very appreciative by the generosity of the Landmark Community. The donated money

ASSOCIATION NEWS December's First Friday Coffee & Conversation (FFC&C) offered another valuable opportunity to ask questions, and share concerns. We appreciate the opportunity to get quick responses to our questions from the Board members and management staff in attendance.
This newsletter article will only hit key points; we encourage all residents to join us each month at FFC&C to hear the full discussion. As the meeting name indicates these sessions are held on the first Friday of the month; 10:00 AM is our start time; location is the main Lounge.
Residents were reminded to pick up a copy of the new fine schedule in the Management Office. The time to submit comments was extended beyond the usual 30-day period, in light of the very busy holiday season. A suggestion was made to include items like this as an insert in the monthly newsletter to assure that residents and off-site owners are aware of changes.
A question was asked about the Main Lounge being unlocked on Christmas and New Year's, in light of the doors being locked on Thanksgiving. Attendees were assured that the room will be open.
Several residents shared concerns about parking. One resident reported being cited for not placing her car in the garage, in error. Some attendees offered examples of rare occasions when they might not garage their car at night; one example was arriving home late and not wanting to walk from a poorly lit garage area. One person noted that if a medical condition or hospitalization causes a car to be parked outside the garage, this information should be shared with the office. Comments called for enforcement

Questions were asked about a specific Board agenda item from the December 3 Board meeting. Board President Bob Crossley advised that the agenda item 2 January 2016 Landmark Living concerning limiting attendance at classes and clubs to Landmark residents was tabled. Additional discussion centered around the cost of set-up and tear-down for the bridge group.
A resident who is a renter protested the recent advisement that only owner can submit work orders. She noted that she has advised the office of problems in the common area via a work order, for the good of the community. Also, her completion of a work order regarding an issue in her unit saves time and assures the issue is addressed promptly.
One long-term resident (18 years) noted that the friendly atmosphere she enjoyed here at Landmark seems to have vanished. She couldn't identify the reason behind this change, but called upon everyone to work to regain this feeling of community and friendship. We hope to continue this conversation at our January FFC&C; all are invited to join the conversation on January 8, 1016.

A Review of Private Landscaping: As each Phase in Landmark is renovated, building maintenance may cause landscaping to be damaged or even removed altogether. However, once all renovation is completed landscapers will replace Association plants and repair damaged areas. If you wish to plant your own private plants, a “Request for Landscape Change" (copies found in the Management office) must be completed and approved by the Landscape Committee (LC) before planting may be done.
Once approval has been granted. or if your unit has had landscaping which was previously approved, please review the following guidelines for Private Landscaping before you consider a landscape change: Nothing may be re-planted nor potted plants replaced around your condominium or garage building without approval of the Landscape Committee (LC); see 2010 Rules and Regulations Addendum C. Applications and a list of approved plants are available from the Management Office. Due to current drought conditions, the LC may not consider new planting changes.

If the water is rising, secure your home. Move outdoor furniture inside, if possible. To keep the damage down, move light-weight items on top of other furniture. For instance, put chairs on top of tables or counters. Disconnect electrical appliances. Remember to never touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. Move important documents up from the bottom drawers of desks and cabinets so they won't get wet. Don't forget the garage move cardboard boxes and other easily damaged items off the floor of the garage.
Now is the time to think of ways to protect our property if flooding happens.

COOKING WITH CATHY I have a cookie recipe. I make pretty good chocolate chip cookies. I follow the recipe on the back of the chocolate chip bag ... just like everyone else does.
So, I decided to make Oatmeal Raisin.
Woohoo! Big daring step.
And then I started changing it up.
I substituted Rye flour for boring bleached wheat. I used real butter. I added dried cherries in place of raisins.
Finally, my favorite, not just cinnamon, I put in Pumpkin Pie Spice.
They turned out great! I'm not bragging, well maybe a little. I love the difference the Rye flour makes in the flavor. I really enjoy the tangyness of the cherries as opposed to sweet raisins.
I gave some to my Chocolate chip (no surprise) cookie loving husband. He asks for them to give to people for gifts. I took some to work and my boss said they were her new favorite cookie. Everyone I share them with asks for the recipe.
Is that enough build up? I could go on but that would be annoying.

Finally, stir in 3 cups of Oats 1 cup Dried Cherries Cover and chill while the oven preheats to 375°. Bake cookies until they smell good and are lightly browned ...

Our Grandparents Group is the latest one of these groups; our purpose is "bringing together Huntington Landmark residents with something in common - the joy of being a grandparent."
In December, we held a cookie baking session with our grandkids and then distributed these holiday cookies at Bingo and other get-togethers. This activity was designed to remind our grandkids of the joy of giving, an idea that can get lost in the commercialization of the holiday season.

TENNIS AND PICKLE CLUB A new year has started and Huntington Landmark Tennis Club is now including Pickleball players. What a welcome addition. Many of our tennis players have either become pickle ball players or have added it to their activity schedules. If you are thinking about pulling out that old racket in the closet, January is a great time to start. The Tennis and Pickleball Club hosts a monthly mixer on the second Saturday of the month.
We will be having a general meeting later this month to elect a new board.

The Tennis Club hosted their annual holiday party, Starry, Starry Night on December 4, 2015. It was a wonderful evening with food catered by Lucci's and entertainment by Laura Angelini. The holiday committee consisted of Linda Wentzel, Judy Armstrong, Nancy Clay, Patricia Heller, Karen Kraushaar, and Alene Reed. Lots of members showed up on the day of the event to help with set up.

THREADS OF LOVE We are a group that meets 9:00-11:00 AM the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month to create items for the neonatal intensive care units in local hospitals. We make lovie dolls, isolet covers, blankets, etc. Some members sew, others may cut, iron fabric or whatever.
