CHIPPING AWAY AT THE RFID SYSTEM Bob Crossley, Board President D uring the week of April 4 a terrific group of people teamed up to take another step toward enhancing our security. The team chipped in, to chip away at the needed task of placing a chip on our vehicles (how could I resist). This was orchestrated and performed by Directors Peggy Dern and Dayton LaGrua and Chairman Jim Copeland with an ensemble of General Manager Kimberly Pollard's staff and many, many enthusiastic volunteers. We'll all benefit from their effort. Thank you all, bravo.

MANAGEMENT REPORT - MARCH 2016 Edward Olson, Assistant General Manager In Phases 1 through 3 Concrete Hazard Solutions completed the grinding of all of the trip hazards. The areas which could not be ground down and need to be removed and replaced staff obtained proposals which well be in the February's board packet. The concrete sidewalk remove and replace was completed by MGB in March. The concrete depth averaged 3.5” to 4" which was a little more than the contractor had figured although no additional cost was billed to the association. The specifications for concrete sidewalks need to be reviewed and revised by the MC to alleviate excessive costs for overbuilding a common sidewalk walkway.

Thompson Air Condition is moving right along and have completed 40 units of the 72 units in Phase #7. To date Thompson completed units 701 to 711. Thompson AC in now in Phase #8.

PPM Construction is working in Phase #4 doing wood repairs on Units 404, 407 and 408. Notices have been sent out to the next section of the Phase #4 Units 409, 410 and 411 with the wood repair work to start February 8th through March 11th. Phase #4 status is listed as follows;

Premax painting is following behind the repair work touching up the paint on buildings 401, 402, 403, 405 and 406.

Also in Phase #4 the gutters and roof diverters were looked at by Rainstopper's who will be providing a proposal per the scope provided. Painting is now complete on buildings 401, thru 409. Notices to paint will be distributed for buildings 410 thru 413. Gutters, diverters and downspouts are scheduled for installation this week starting at building 401.

There was a high spot in the asphalt by the Merced garages and during the last storm event some of the runoff puddled in one of the garages. JWC inspected the area, located the issue and contacted the asphalt contractor to make the necessary grind and patch. The contractor will be scheduling the work sometime in February. This repair has been completed. JWC is going to perform some asphalt boring to test samples in the next phase.

ORANGE COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION: Orange county fire protection did their annual fire testing and maintenance requirements per the California code of regulations, Title 19901 to 906 to the automatic sprinkler system in Phase #2. The total cost of the repairs comes to $922.08.

Financial Statement Summary of Huntington Landmark Homeowners Association - February 2016 Financial statement will be in June's issue UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY LIVING Walt White, Board of Directors Landmark's new legal counsel and reserve analyst recently conducted a very informative webinar about community association living. There were two main concepts presented that provide a plan for improving living in a community association. They are Shared Obligations and Balanced Responsibilities.

Shared Obligations – Owners and Residents Living in a community association (common interest development) offers many advantages to its owners and residents - recreational facilities, social programs, property maintenance, controlled access, etc. However, with the ben-

Balanced Responsibilities – Board of Directors Since it is impractical for all owners to manage the affairs of a community association, they elect representatives (Board of Directors) to carry out those responsibilities. The Board establishes policies and engages a management company to administer day-to-day operations. The Board must be concerned with balancing the four major "worlds” of community association management: • • CORPORATION (laws, governing documents, bylaws, rules, elections) · BUSINESS (cash flow, budgets, financial controls, savings for future, insurance) REAL ESTATE PROJECT (property values, proper care and maintenance) • COMMUNITY (neighbors, friends, and families)

Summary It is up to us as owners and residents of Landmark to focus on our Shared Obligations. We must also understand our Board's duty of Balanced Responsibilities. By focusing on these two concepts and working hard to see we are both an understanding and a sharing community, Landmark will continue to be an outstanding community association. ANIMAL SHELTER DONATIONS Diane Yrisarri, Lifestyle Director Animal shelters are usually overcrowded and underfunded.

Many shelters would welcome donations of blankets, flat sheets, towels, washcloths, small rugs, pet beds, collars, leashes, harnesses, toys, food, treats, kitty litter, kitty boxes, dog crates, water/food bowls, carriers, etc. Denise Norman, Huntington Landmark resident has requested if you have donations, she will pick up any items from you that you'd like to donate and take them to our local shelters. Microchip your pet. That way, if you are separated, you can be eventually reunited. Keep a collar and name tag on your animal, even an indoor cat. If your home is damaged, they may easily escape. Be sure the ID tag has a current phone number.

Another tip―exchange pet information and a house key with a trusted neighbor or nearby friend. If you are not home when disaster strikes, they can evacuate your pet for you.

Keep an emergency kit for your pet. A supply of food and a can opener if you use canned food. Extra water. A replacement supply of medication if your pet takes any. Put a picture of you and your pet in the kit so you can prove ownership of your buddy. Extra pictures of your pet in case you need to make "lost pet" signs. The medications are to be removed from their original bottles and dumped together into a ziploc bag. No Liquids, syringes, needles, or inhalers will be accepted. Never discard medications by flushing them down the drain. When disposing of them in the trash place the medications in a ziploc bag mixed with coffee grounds, kitty litter or egg shells, etc.

If you are unable to make this date and time, know that the Huntington Police Department is still collecting expired/unused medications at their 2000 Main Street location.

Once again to help the "Dog Days” organizers we will also be collecting the empty medicine bottles.

The Hilbert Museum (hilbertmuseum.org) is located at 167 N. Atchison St.

across from the train station. I visited the first week it opened and it was love at first sight. This is the first museum in the nation to exhibit California Scene Painting exclusively. This narrative form of painting gives us a glimpse of everyday life in California from roughly the 1920s- 1970s. It takes us through the aftermath of the Great Depression, the urbanization and industrialization of the State, and the growth of the Hollywood movie industry. Many of the artists such as Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, William Jeckel, and Jack Laycox may be familiar to you. Some of their works have been exhibited at the Irvine Museum. There are also little known but talented artists displayed. Many worked in the movie studios or taught at local art schools while they did their own painting on the side.

Mark and Janet Hilbert generously donated 500 artworks from their collection to Chapman University as well as three million dollars toward the development of the museum. Eventually, the larger Villa Park Orchards packing house will be renovated into a space that will display the entire collection.

Currently, there are 104 paintings on display. The museum, open Tuesday-Saturday, is free and there is a free parking lot in front of the museum. If the lot is full, you can get a parking pass at the desk. There are currently no docents. If you would like a docent tour for your group, you can call in advance to make arrangements. The website has hours, directions, and shows some of the artworks.

If you decide to have lunch while you are in Orange, there is a Ruby's Diner across from the museum. There are also 38 other places to eat within a mile of the Old Towne circle. I recommend leaving your car at the museum and walking instead of HILBERT MUSEUM battling for a parking space at the circle. Watson's Soda Fountain and Café reopened recently after a change of ownership and major renovation. This iconic local landmark originally opened as Watson's drugstore in 1899.

It is one of Orange County's oldest businesses. Watson's was known for its old-fashioned drugstore ambiance and comfort food such as hamburgers and milkshakes. The new look is more contemporary and the menu is eclectic.

They still serve their famous hamburgers and milkshakes but now, some of the milkshakes contain alcohol. If you like antiques, it's a great place to browse after lunch.

My daughter was due at Christmas. I didn't want her to lose her birthday in the middle of the Christmas season.

Since I had to have a C-section anyway, we scheduled her for two weeks early. That was also my husband's birthday.

So, what do you do for a birthday cake for a grown man and a little girl? Strawberry cake became their tradition.

My sister makes fun of me for never making a recipe according to the instructions. But cake mixes are made for changing up. Take a basic white or vanilla cake mix. If you add frozen strawberries, it tastes so much better than a strawberry flavored cake mix. You can slice fresh strawberries, add sugar and freeze or make it easy on yourself and buy the kind in the plastic containers in the frozen fruit section of the grocery store. When defrosted, the sugar and juice from the berries form syrup. The berries will keep the cake moist.

In the early days, I just made a simple cake in a 12x9 glass baking dish, left it in the dish and iced the top. I decorated each half appropriately for husband/daughter. Over time, I became more creative. If you want fancy, make a layer cake with sliced fruit in the middle. For kids, make a bundt cake, frost and fill the hole with gummies or candied fruit.

For my guys at work, I make cupcakes.

Ingredients: Cake 1 Box Vanilla or White cake mix 3/4 cup Frozen/defrosted strawberries ½ cup water ½ cup oil 3 eggs 3 Cup 2 Cup CUP Frosting 1 lb Powdered sugar 4 oz Cream Cheese (room temperature) 3 tbl Frozen/defrosted strawberries.

Mix together cake ingredients Sheed Strawberries in big bowl. Sometimes I puree the strawberries in the blender so the strawberries don't get stuck to the beaters. Other times I like the texture the berry pieces add to the cake. Pour into greased and floured baking pan of choice. Bake in preheated oven 350° for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely. In a small bowl, whip together frosting ingredients. Start on slow speed, so the powdered sugar doesn't fly everywhere. Add additional strawberry juice until frosting is consistency that you like. Turn cake onto serving platter, frost and decorate.

Huntington Landmark seems to be LANDMARK LIVING filled with grandparents and grandchildren...our new club has 38 members who collectively enjoy 60 grandchildren. We've learned that 12 are ages infant to two, 13 are three to five, 12 are six to nine, 15 are ten to thirteen, and 8 are teens.

A number of grandparents babysit from time to time. If you are blessed to be watching a grandchild and would like to have company or a play date, please join us and find some new friends! We have resources and recommendations on fun places to take children, including parks and playgrounds in the area.

The Grandparents Club also sponsored a well-attended CPR/AED class in April, open to all Landmark residents and taught by Certified American Red Cross instructors. Another class will be offered in the fall.

MAT MAKERS B.J. O'Rourke & Sylvia Widmeyer (Co-chairs) Members of the Monday Mat Makers, BJ O'Rourke and Debb Clay, recently visited the Long Beach VA Community Resource and Referral Center (VA's CRRC). At that time they delivered 15 "Compassionate Carpets" or mats.

These mats are time consuming and labor intensive - taking 600+ bags to make one mat, it can take the bag processors and knitters/crocheters upwards of 50-60 hours to make one mat - but they provide a former soldier with warmth and a cushioned area to sleep. The VA's CRRC is an amazing place providing a multitude of services to our homeless veterans and their service animals. In addition to medical exams and prescription medications, the center assists veterans in finding jobs and housing. They have a 24/7 hot line for veterans needing assistance. Their goal is to eliminate homelessness. So our goal as mat makers to is aid in the transition with providing a little comfort along the way. DVD LIBRARY Recreation Thank you to all Landmark residents who are using the new system to check out DVDs in the library. Your cooperation helps the committee maintain a current inventory. Please return the DVDs to the Recreation Office, not the library. Some DVDs that were missing have been returned. Thanks to all who have found and returned them.

NEIGHBOR ASSIST Ruth Williamson Neighbor Assist a quiet service offered to Landmark residents. By providing wheelchairs, companion chairs, walkers, canes, crutches, shower chairs, toilet seat risers and commodes, residents don't have to purchase these items. And when they are no longer needed, the items can be returned.

We also accept donations of these same items (except for commodes).

If you are in need of an item, please call 714-960-2277 and leave a message. The phone is answered daily by a volunteer, so allow 24 hours for us to contact you. When leaving the message please provide your name, unit number, a contact phone number and mention what item you are looking for.
