LIDO ISLANDER PUBLISHED BY THE LIDO ISLE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION TANCE 12 N JANUARY 2021 SPREAD Watch LIYC Change of Vatch On Saturday, December 5th Lido Isle Yacht Club held its Annual Meeting. In a nod to Covid, the meeting was both in-person and online.

We met in the clubhouse, observing capacity limits and social distancing guidelines. Everyone was masked except the Commodore and Vice Commodore when speaking. For the first time in the history of the Yacht Club, members attended the Annual Meeting on Zoom. Because of Covid requirements, the club decided to forgo the Change of Watch dinner dance. Commodore Brian Benson held the swearing in ceremony at the end of the annual meeting for incoming Commodore Allison Witton and Rear Commodore Russ Butcher. Newly minted Vice Commodore John Clement did not attend the meeting as he was racing his boat in the San Diego Hot Rum series in preparation for entry into the Transpac Race later this year. The Commodore excused his absence - noting that the only reason to miss a yacht club meeting is to go sailing!

The Vice Commodore's report shared the work of the sailing committee this year. With social events cancelled, Junior Sailing was at the heart of the club's activities in 2020. Commodore Witton's report is excerpted below.

"In a time when our kids had to give up so much - playgrounds, playdates, favorite team sports, seeing friends, grandparents and in person school - we fought to get our kids on the water - to give them fun and normalcy.

BY STAFF COMMODORE BRIAN BENSON We cancelled spring sailing with heavy hearts. Sailing Director Brooke Sharp and Assistant Sailing Director Jack Thompson and I began to look to the summer. We, along with the Sailing Committee knew that we needed to find a way to have a summer sailing program.

Sailing (unlike many team sports) can be inherently socially distant.

More importantly, sailing means being in nature and seeing friends.

It is a sport of resilience - on the water constant adaptation is critical.

Wind shifts, current, boat handling and sail trim- all are continually changing. Much is out of the sailor's control. Like we have had to do in this pandemic, we adapt. The water provides an opportunity to practice these tools of resilience and for our kids to understand that they can roll with change, master skills that help them to adapt and overcome the obstacles that change brings.

Getting the program off the ground meant scrapping everything and starting from scratch. We had to understand and develop Covid Safety protocols and apply them to our program. We consulted CDC websites and our Fleet Surgeon. We reached out to city and local authorities and attended Virtual US Sailing seminars. We networked with sailing programs nationally. I met regularly with the other Junior Sailing Chairs on the bay and Brooke and Jack worked closely with their fellow sailing directors. Brooke and Jack re-designed all of our classes, created foot traffic plans for the boat garden and arranged for the club to purchase face coverings and individual hand sanitizers for every sailor and instructor. All while managing the regular business of hiring coaches, registration, pricing, marketing

In the last two months, we have been able to participate in some limited in-person events with certain safeguards. First off, we were able to organize a Thanksgiving food drive for our homeless. We formed small groups to walk nearby neighborhoods and pass out food drive bags to homes. Then, we picked up the loaded bags with nonperishable food items a week later and delivered the bounty to our local homeless shelter. They greatly appreciated our contribution as their emergency food supply was dwindling. Also, we got the chance to go to the Irvine Regional Park for some exciting adventures. Scouts shot BB guns, went zip lining, and did a high ropes/obstacle course that (just as the name infers) was up VERY high! Although our in-person activities have been scarce in 2020, the New Year holds the promise of a return to being physically together again as a scouting community. As such,

• Always lock all doors and windows whenever you leave your home.

Burglars often operate during the day, so don't forget to secure your home and set your alarm when you make a quick trip to the store or take the dog for a walk.

• Use timers to turn on a radio and lights. Timers are not just for vacation time, but should be used daily to keep your home well-lit and to give the appearance that someone is there.

• Avoid displaying electronic items and other valuables in places where they will be easily seen from your windows or doors.

• Always keep your porch lights on from dusk to dawn using photocells and/ or timers.

• Don't let home deliveries pile-up at your front door, they can attract a package thief or home burglar. Remember you have options to consider when ordering online or shipping packages: o UPS and FedEx both offer customers the ability to customize the time and date of their delivery for when they will be home.

o Track your delivery online. Check your package's delivery status for an estimated delivery time and try to be home when it arrives.

o If you won't be home when the packages arrive, coordinate with a neighbor to pick them up & hang onto them until you can get home.

o Consider using in-store pick up or Amazon lockers if you anticipate that you won't be home when your packages are set to arrive.

Old Isle By Carol Mason Lucky Lido LEGACY Anyone in the Los Angeles area should be familiar with the legacy of Lucky Baldwin. His extensive land holdings became the foundation of towns such as Arcadia, Monrovia, Sierra Madre and Baldwin Park. He was a fabulously wealthy man who was the largest employer in LA County in the late 1800s. His daughter, Anita Baldwin, lived on a large plot of land in Arcadia until her death in 1940. She left two children, one of whom, Baldwin M.

Baldwin (1904-1970), eventually, by way of World War II and Park Avenue, New York City, became a resident of Lido Isle, along with his wife, Maruja.

The Baldwins lived at 326 Via Lido Nord (their house is no longer there) and enjoyed the Lido lifestyle to the fullest.

Baldwin was an accomplished yachtsman (the Baldwin Cup sailing race is named after him) and passionate art collector.

Like another wealthy Lido Isle yachtsman of the time, Briggs Cunningham, the Baldwin wealth did not go unnoticed. Old Isle has covered the rather dramatic armed robbery at the Cunningham house in the early 1970s. The Baldwin house was the victim of a burglary in 1974 that was also memorable.

In May of 1974, after Baldwin M. Baldwin's death, burglars smashed a stained glass window in the master bedroom of the Baldwin Lido home. They were able to make off with gold and silver coins, a wine-tasting set, jewelry, and most memorably, a king-sized bedspread made of 69 red fox pelts. The bedspread was valued at $5000 (in 1974 dollars) and the total haul was worth in the vicinity of $112,000. The burglary was then called the second largest in the history of Lido Isle, after the Cunningham robbery. Old Isle could not find a reference as to whether any arrests were made in connection with the heist.

Apparently the burglars missed some things, however, as the Baldwins' art collection seemingly remained intact. In 1988 Maruja Baldwin made a major donation to the San Diego Museum of Art. The donation was a collection of ToulouseLautrec works consisting of 100 lithographs, 2 major paintings and 8 drawings. You can buy a book discussing the Lautrec collection at the museum (pictured). Shopping reminders: • Do not to leave shopping bags (or any other property) in your car.

A fourth generation Californian, Anita was born Anita Jane Freeman and raised in the San Joaquin Valley town of Madera. She lived an idyllic childhood with Yosemite National Park in her backyard, summer vacations to Bass Lake & Seabright, and school shopping trips to San Francisco. She was a cheerleader and straight A student.

After high school, Anita attended UCLA and was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. It was there she

After high school, Anita attended UCLA and was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. It was there she met Ted Krasel. They married in 1957 settling in Santa Monica, then Sherman Oaks. Anita and Ted had two daughters, Heidi and Hanna. Anita was a Camp Fire Girl leader and very involved in the Valley Heart Juniors Guild benefiting Children's Hopital of Los Angeles.

In 1970, the Krasels moved to Newport Beach.

Anita and her girls joined the Newport Chapter of National Charity League and the family became immersed in this coastal lifestyle. They also spent years of winter weekends taking carloads of teenagers to ski at Mammoth Mountain.

Eventually moving from Westcliff to Lido, Anita and Ted built a home on Via Yella. Anita became active in the Lido Isle Womens' Club, Philharmonic Society, and spent long afternoons playing bridge with her Lido friends. She was also a docent at the Newport Harbor Art Museum.

Anita later married Lido Islander, Donald Dabney and they enjoyed many years together here.

Anita and Don left Lido for a smaller home in The Bluffs. She had a great time remodeling the place and filling it with their many antiques and treasures. Don passed away in 2010, and Anita moved to a wonderful assisted living situation on Balboa Island. She loved it there. She especially loved her daily strolls around the boardwalk with "hellos" to and from those who came to know her.

Anita is survived by her two daughters, Heidi Dobrott (John) of Lido and Hanna Skjonsby (Greg) of Beacon Bay. Anita has four grandchildren, Claire Skjonsby Squier (Casey), Andrew Skjonsby, Charlotte Skjonsby Daubner (Max), and John Dobrott, Jr. (Alyssa). And, four great

No service has been planned because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but hopefully sometime in the new year.

NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC WORKS Project Fact Sheet Via Lido Soud & Nord Water Main Replacement ABOUT THIS PROJECT The Via Lido Soud & Nord Water Main Replacement project replaces older, deteriorated cast iron water mains installed in the 1930's that have outlived their design life and are now due to be replaced. Work also includes replacement of non-standard water meter boxes located in existing driveways for homes fronting Via Lido Soud and Via Lido Nord.

WHEN WILL CONSTRUCTION START?

Construction will begin in November 2020 and completion is anticipated in August 2021. See reverse side for the current construction phasing plan, which is subject to change. Generally the Contractor will work from Area 1 thru Area 4.

ACTION IS NECESSARY at this time regarding possible water meter box replacement. For nonstandard meter boxes, the contractor will be upsizing these boxes and pouring a six-inch concrete encasement around the perimeter of the new box. Dredging our bay is always a positive. The City of Newport Beach describes below their rendition of the Project Description. In this description they reference their plan to place a CAD, (450' by 450' with a depth of 47' hole) in the middle of the anchorage 'in the central portion of the Lower Harbor between Bay Island, Lido Isle and Harbor Island' their plan is to place all unsuitable for ocean disposal sediment in this area. PROJECT DESCRIPTION per the City of Newport Beach Newport Harbor, located in Newport Bay, is one of the largest recreational harbors in the United States. Natural processes result in the movement and accumulation of sediment which must be dredged periodically to maintain channel depth for safe navigation. The Federal Channels are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

The remainder of the Harbor is managed and maintained by the City and Orange County. USACE conducts annual bathymetric surveys to determine the amount of sediment that has accumulated in the Federal Channels and to assess the need for maintenance dredging.

The most recent sediment sampling effort conducted in 2018 and 2019 determined that most of the material was determined suitable for disposal at a permitted open ocean location (or nearshore). However, dredging in the Main Channel and channel offshoots will expose some sediment that has been determined to be unsuitable for ocean disposal and therefore requires an alternate disposal location. Therefore, dredging of these areas is not feasible without also identifying a practicable management option for the unsuitable sediment.

To manage the unsuitable material, the City proposes to construct a confined aquatic disposal (CAD) facility in the central portion of the Lower Harbor between Bay Island, Lido Isle and Harbor Island where dredged sediment unsuitable for open ocean disposal or nearshore placement can be contained. Clean material suitable for beach nourishment generated from constructing the CAD facility will be transported and disposed at an approved open ocean disposal site or along the nearshore ocean beaches. The City is also proposing to allow maintenance dredging in sections of Newport Harbor outside the Federal Channels to re-establish safe navigation. Please refer to the Draft EIR posted on our website for a detailed project description.

For me in particular, this year flew by having a new baby, coming back from maternity leave to rework an entire sailing program around new COVID-19 restrictions and best practices, the ups and downs of keeping a program running during a pandemic, and re-envisioning a fall program with more collaboration between the Balboa Bay Fleet clubs and LBYC certainly kept me busy. I felt like I blinked and the year was over!

As I write this we're in a new stay-at-home order but, ever the optimists, we continue to plan 2021 programming. With the success of our fall program in which all the sailors and coaches stayed healthy, I am looking forward to running a safe spring program. Final details are forthcoming but we plan to have our spring program registration online by January 15th for a mid-March start date. Mark your calendars and be sure to sign up early!

Pround to be an LIYC Sailor for Life I've had a lot of change in my life, especially in recent years. Life has accelerated so much and one of the few constants has been LIYC; the sailing program, the Jr. Board, but most of all: the community. I vividly remember coming into the sailing program as a Sea Monkey and later as a Novice. I felt terrified of the water, and was unknown to everyone, but I was instantly welcomed for life. It's been more than a decade since then and now my time has come to move on to new things.

That's a momentous ask, but it's only so difficult because of how fondly I look back on my time with the club. It was a catalyst that propelled me into my next stage of life, giving me endless experience, warm memories, and close friendships.

I'm proud to be an LIYC sailor for life. I'm proud to have coached at LIYC. I'm proud of my five-years on the Jr. Board. I'm proud of all of the events we were able to put on for the community, the fund raising we did for the club, the donation we collected, and our expert adaptation to a global pandemic. My special thanks go out to Brooke Sharpe, Amy Wolken, and everyone I've had

I am honored and excited to serve as your Commodore this year. While I have met many of you, I'd like to share a bit about myself and my family as I begin this role. I am a lifelong sailor - it's usually the first thing I tell people. The first time I spent the night on a boat, I was ten days old. I grew up on the East Coast - the youngest in an extended, close family of passionate sailors. My parents, aunts, uncles and cousins all deeply involved in the sport. As a young kid, we cruised the North East on our family boat. I sailed optimists, Blue Jays and 420's in our club's Jr Program

In my 20's I began inshore and offshore sailing with my family on their J44. For nearly 20 years we actively campaigned the boat in the highly competitive J44 one design class - some years racing in as many as 13 regattas. This was a truly a family program - my Dad as skipper, my mom as tactician, my sister navigating and my brother, along with my husband, Karl, and I trimming along with various cousins and relatives to round out the crew. While “around the buoys” is fun, ocean racing became my great passion. I have done seven Newport to Bermuda Races and a Marblehead to Halifax race. Karl is also from a sailing family and we share a passion for the water. He grew up in Scotland and started cruising with his parents when he was four. Karl also did junior sailing. He raced dinghies and then big boats throughout the UK and Europe. We met when our respective clubs raced against each other in the Commodore's International Cup in 2003. Today, we are introducing our daughter Grace to life on the water and all its lessons. It is a great pleasure to share this sport with her.

We came to Lido in 2017. In the 5 years before, we lived in two countries and three states for Karl's work. This was our fifth move in as many years. Lido is a very special place. We were immediately welcomed by this community - neighbors like Nancy Kriz and Staff Commodore Diana Miner showing up at our door with care packages and welcome wishes

Staff Commodore Bob Yates inviting Karl and me to crew for him on his Harbor 20. We joined the club right away and got involved with the encouragement of HSC Juli Ackerman and Staff Commodore Eric Auckerman. This is a very special club. Lido has a magic combination of dedicated members and a steady stream of new members.

We have a strong financial foundation and access to great facilities. We have a strong junior program that teaches our kids to sail and race. We have an active fleet of cruisers who explore our coastline. Most important is the spirit of volunteerism and fun. I am constantly impressed by the can-do nature of our volunteers. They show up to make our club and by extension island and community a better place.

This has been a tough year for so many. Losing our social events was just one element of normalcy that went away overnight. It was incredibly disappointing to have to cancel our calendar. We enter 2021 with optimism. In September, your Flag Officers laid out our calendar for the year. As soon as we can safely gather, we will be ready. We have planned to host our Friday Barbecues and parties. In honor of the Trans Pac Race, we will hold a Trans Pac Party. In conjunction with this party Lido will hold an ocean race invitational. We are working with the H20 fleet to host events. As soon as we have the opportunity to gather, you will know.

meet big challenges throughout the summer. Like other programs on the bay, we faced closures and had to quarantine sailors and instructors but we got on the water - our kids raced and sailed and they had fun.

I would like share some words of support for the program that we received over the summer from parents: "During this time of uncertainty and stress, LIYC has been able to deliver our children the opportunity to be outside, grow and learn in developmentally advantageous ways, and participate in a sport that can be described as healing. Overall, Lido hosted 5 regattas and many Balboa Bay Fleet races for a total of 21 race days.

In 2021 the SOS will be held in the continued safe, sane and fun manner of the past few months. For the first few months of the year the SOS will return to an afternoon time from 1-5pm so come down to the San Remo tennis court at any time between 1 & 5 pm, hit a few balls, relax and experience the friendship of your neighbors. The SOCIAL ON SUNDAY has a lively spirit, wonderful food and fine refreshments (served in a corona-conscious manner). There is no charge for the reservation and you may reserve the court for 1.5 hours. If you would like to play at the court without a reservation, you may do so; however, if there is a reservation than you will be expected to relinquish the court to those who have reserved it.

Tennis Tip Play the percentages! Build the point. Don't overplay the ball including playing the lines. Play offense but don't just go for winners. Most matches at your level are won by your opponent's errors, not by your winners.

JUNIOR MATCH PLAYDAY JUNIOR PLAY DAY PLAYERS L to R - Jimmy Ransom, Mason Edwards, Matty Weiss Twenty-one Juniors came out to the Lido courts to participate in a match play event held on November 22. In order to be eligible to play, the players had to show that they knew how to keep score and make at least 50% of their serves into the service box. The format on the San Remo court was a 5-player round robin where each child played against all others a total of 4 games. The player that won the most total games was the winner. A double elimination format was used on the other 2 courts. Each match was a total of 3 games(no ad scoring) in which the winner moved on to the next round. To see these hard-working juniors continue to improve and enjoy this amazing sport is truly rewarding as their coach.

He and his family moved to Lido in 2019 and are loving it! Matthew and his mom Laura are extremely excited about the tennis program here on Lido Isle. They are very involved! Matthew plays in a clinic with his friends, is doing private lessons, and is utilizing the court that is just steps away from his home to play tennis with friends and family. He would like to pursue competitive play. Matthew recently got a taste of playing competitive tennis during a small junior match play event held on the San Remo court. He was the winner! He plays soccer for the Pateadores team, loves hanging out with his posse of school and tennis buddies and enjoys going to the beach. Matthew's future looks bright as he has all the tools to become a good player. He is focused, calm, competitive, driven and loves the sport. Way to go Rasta!! You're one cool kid!!
